The land beside Whitminster Avenue was common pasture from the Middle Ages, then farmland until around 1920, when council housing replaced Birches Green Farm. In 1894 Erdington broke from Aston parish to become its own Urban District, centred on Rookery House.
Activity centres on Spring Lane Playing Fields: a sports pavilion was approved in January 2025, a 20-metre monopole was refused in November 2024, and two 2026 applications covering a netball court, car parking and ecology conditions are currently under assessment.
Beneath Spring Lane Playing Fields a natural spring, long diverted into a culvert, resurfaces on the adjacent site; above ground, 4 acres of self-seeded woodland have grown around it. A Royal Artillery heavy anti-aircraft battery, designated H10, was mapped at Erdington during the Second World War.
Spring Lane Playing Fields hosts Erdington Rugby, Erdington Cricket and Aston Unity Cricket clubs, plus a Birmingham Cricket League grass square of eight wickets. One forum contributor, born in Whitminster Avenue in 1959, recalled that the anti-aircraft gun shook nearby houses and was known locally as Big Bertha.
