40,000 Birmingham tickets sold in one day for Sutton's steeplechases, second only to the Grand National
History

Doe Bank's name first appears in a 1774 lease for land adjoining Sutton Park. Doe Bank House stood at the corner of Wentworth Road and Lichfield Road until 1965, when it was demolished and six houses in Hampton Drive replaced it.

Planning

A 1976 tree-preservation order covers land between Tamworth Road and Little Sutton Lane. Residents persuaded Birmingham's planning department to reject a 2020 5G mast proposal on the Little Sutton Lane green, while in the early 1970s Bleak House narrowly escaped a compulsory purchase for a planned relief road.

Geography

Little Sutton Lane was formally set out in 1824 across former common land, at thirty feet wide and 1,130 yards long. An 1863 Act of Parliament surveyed a railway route crossing beneath Lichfield Road near the lane, but it was never built.

Local colour

On 12 February 1866, wine merchant Mr Sheldon staged the Birmingham Steeplechase near Tamworth Road with five races. A year later 40,000 tickets were sold in Birmingham for the same meeting, second only to the Grand National, though the races at Moor Hall ended in 1873 when land was taken for building.
