In the 1840s the area held large garden villas; by 1915 one had become The Norlands Hospital. Birmingham's post-war Lyndhurst Estate won a 1961 Civic Trust design award before later demolitions reshaped it entirely.
The Lyndhurst Estate suffered anti-social behaviour and drug dealing in the late twentieth century. A Drug Action Team intervention was later reported to have cut drug-related crime by 80%.
A 2010 outline consent envisaged up to 316 homes plus a relocated youth centre and health facility. Later reserved-matters phases added 26 houses in 2013 and 111 more across phases 2 and 3.
The estate sits on a ridge that rises 10 metres from Sutton Road then falls 9 metres to the Cross-City Railway. Some mature trees mark boundaries that predate the 1960s estate; Chester Road station, opened in 1862, first drew development to the area.
Residents in 1960 could still catch a film at the Pavillion Cinema on Chester Road. Writer CJ Lloyd Webley, who grew up on the estate, turned its wash-yard and scaffolding-pole goalposts into the subject of a 2025 theatre work.
