On Cranmer Grove
In 1884 Birmingham day-trippers took the train to Hill Hook for pike fishing, swings and afternoon tea in an old railway carriage.
History

Hill Hook began as a handful of cottages on open common land. By 1698 it had around fourteen households, and in 1785 a cobbler's house served as the hamlet's only licensed place of worship.

Crime

In April 2025, a van fleeing West Midlands Police drove onto the course at Aston Wood Golf Club on Blake Street and struck Suzanne Cherry, 62, who died four days later. Driver John McDonald, 51, was jailed for thirteen years and six months.

Planning

In 1983 a housing application beside Balmoral Road, creating Netherstone Grove, was approved despite objections. Barratt and Clark Homes then built along the reserve's southern and western edges, before Hill Hook was designated a Local Nature Reserve in 1992.

Geography

Hill Hook corn mill is recorded from 1671, making it Sutton's most northerly mill. The Bourne Brook still feeds the mill pool, and the original outflow culvert survives beneath the dam, though choked with debris.

Local colour

After Blake Street station opened in 1884, Hill Hook's defunct mill became a Birmingham day-trip spot. In 1925 Joseph Smith ran the fishing, where the pool was stocked with pike, while visitors took afternoon tea in a converted railway carriage beside the swings and roundabouts.
