Pype Hayes Hall dates from 1632, its timber frame hidden beneath late Georgian stucco added during Bagot family alterations. The Romantic poet Robert Southey worked here on his biography of William Cowper, and by 1920 the estate had become a public park.
Chester Road has drawn robbers for seven centuries. In 1323 Elias le Collier lost £300 to thieves here, and in 1750 two highwaymen stripped Henry Hunt of his watch and money before riding off to rob a second victim in plain sight.
A 2024 application proposed 22 industrial and commercial units on a former roadside site at Chester Road, while a listed-building consent sought demolition of a wartime air raid shelter standing directly in front of Pype Hayes Hall.
Plants Brook divides a golf course from Pype Hayes Park as it runs northwest to southeast. Opposite the park, Plantsbrook Nature Park occupies the former site of an 18th-century forge, and one hollow left by commercial gravel quarrying is still visible inside the park itself.
In 1955 a man digging potatoes on an allotment behind Welwyndale Road unearthed a Civil War coin hoard of 30 silver pieces, now in Birmingham Museum. The 1891 Census records William and Lucy Bagot at the hall with a dozen servants.
