The Ridgeway name was already in use by 1928, with houses stretching from Farley Road to College Road. Tarmacadam surfacing followed in 1931, and by 1938 building had extended as far as Brookvale Road.
After World War One, Birmingham Corporation built a municipal estate at Upper Witton between Gypsy Lane and The Ridgeway. The M6 managed motorway scheme between junctions 5 and 8, announced in 2011, affects the southern edge of the same locality.
The Ridgeway forms the eastern boundary of Witton Cemetery, a 40-hectare site on a west-facing slope above the River Tame valley. A lime avenue 300 metres long runs from the war memorial inside the cemetery to the east entrance on The Ridgeway.
Inside the cemetery's east gate off The Ridgeway stands Witton Old Jewish Cemetery, whose 1876 granite obelisk marks the reburial of remains from the closed Granville Street ground. A Cross of Sacrifice reached by four flights of stone steps and a Commonwealth screen wall naming the dead of both world wars complete the ridge.
