Paddock Road once ended at a bridle path to Upper Gore End Farm and still hides a 1903 hand-laundry
History

Second Lieutenant Clarence Arthur Lyon Pemble of No. 2 was killed in action on 1 August 1918. The Central Garage, built at the Station Road corner between 1926 and 1933, was demolished in 1987 and replaced by the block now holding the Sue Ryder shop.

Crime

At 1.17am on 14 January 2022, British Transport Police were called to Birchington railway station after a stabbing. A 45-year-old victim was airlifted to a London hospital with serious injuries, and two 25-year-old men later appeared in court.

Planning

A three-storey children's home for eight children was refused in 1996 and dismissed at appeal, but a scaled-back two-storey version for five children fronting Paddock Road was approved in 1997. A 2002 proposal to absorb an adjoining flat drew ten letters of objection, one a petition of fifteen signatures.

Geography

By the mid-19th century, Paddock Road marked the southern limit of Birchington's built village along Station Road. A bridle path from its far end joined the route via Kent Gardens to Upper Gore End Farm, while the road toward the sea forked near the railway bridge into what is now Grenham Road.

Local colour

Hughenden Laundry on Paddock Road advertised experienced laundresses and spacious drying grounds in its 1903 brochure, and by 1930 traded as Snowdrift Hand Laundry. The building still stands, now used as a storage and car workshop, while its former drying grounds are the gardens of Hughenden Terrace.
