In 1920 the recreation ground was bought by public subscription as Westgate's First World War memorial, before the British Legion erected a separate monument on Sea Road three years later. The land nearby once belonged to Doon House and St Augustine's College, whose grounds were later turned into housing.
The dominant concern is nuisance vehicles on the recreation ground, not conventional street crime. Police logged a moped, a high-powered e-bike and an off-road motorcycle evading officers across the fields, and the recovered moped proved stolen.
A 1976 outline permission for college-grounds housing accessed from Lymington Road was never built, and a later 133-unit scheme proposed the same entrance point. Attention has since shifted to the community skatepark: Phase One is open and a £20,000 government grant is funding Phase Two.
The road is flanked by protected open land: the recreation ground is a designated Local Green Space, and the allotments beside it date from the 1920s and run to 95 plots.
In December 2018 a councillor and a resident planted more than 1,250 spring bulbs in the Rec, and the ground's event history includes Punch and Judy shows, summer picnics and a Santa sleigh route taking in the surrounding streets.
