Northwood was still scattered farmsteads on the 1797 and Tithe maps. The Hare and Hounds corner pub dates to the 1840s, K Laundry was founded in 1928, and nearby St Mark's began life in an 1884 corrugated-iron hut.
Reported incidents include a 2017 distraction burglary targeting a woman in her 80s, a 2024 copper and tools theft, and a 2017 crash into the Hare and Hounds that left the driver trapped and needed cutting free.
The former K Laundry site carries significant contamination, rated Poor, meaning any reuse requires full demolition. A 2024 appeal to build a bungalow behind No. 16 was dismissed, with fire-damaged premises and the Northwood Club noted as nearby complications.
A 1983 bungalow build on Hopes Lane cut through a medieval pit containing brigandine armour fragments. A 1993 watching brief at nearby Pullman Close revealed Roman settlement, a cremation group with four vessels, and a possible villa foundation spotted in 1951 aerial photographs.
In 1858, Antonia Simpson was sentenced to a month's hard labour for stealing 4s from the Hare and Hounds till. The area also had a Wesleyan mission congregation from 1931, which merged into Hardres United Church in 1988.
