A hamlet called Bucknall End stood here until the 18th century, its name traceable to 1262. Castle Bromwich's open fields were only enclosed after 1802, and the resulting farmland became Birmingham's largest municipal estate after 1950, with some 1950s housing later demolished for structural faults.
A 2017 Birmingham Cycle Revolution consultation proposed a shared footway and cycleway along this stretch, linking the Cole Valley Route to Jaguar Land Rover's Castle Bromwich site via Bridgeford Road's junction area. The proposals were explicitly preliminary and subject to change.
The crossing at Cole Hall Lane, recorded as Collebrugge in 1405, has been rebuilt at least twice, with floods around 1970 producing the present single-lane bridge. The same farmland once ran to 40 hectares before Solihull Sanitary Authority converted it into sewage filter beds.
Cole Hall Farmhouse became The Poacher's Pocket pub in 1984, then stood empty, and is now a children's nursery. Both the farmhouse and its 18th-century barn remain Grade II Listed, while Shard End Library, opened in 2012, holds a dedicated local-history collection.
