Heath Way's post-war extension to Hodge Hill Common opened up Shard End's municipal estate, but the land it crosses was already ancient: Buckland End was a documented hamlet from 1066, and its medieval open fields survived until enclosure after 1802.
Three serious incidents have occurred on Heath Way in recent years: a fatal assault in 2023, a stabbing in 2024, and a fatal cyclist collision in 2026.
A 2026 safety scheme for Heath Way specifies 8 speed cushions at named house numbers and a new pedestrian refuge island at the Buckland End roundabout, while Sandham Grange sheltered housing dates the street's later build phase to 1971 to 1989.
The River Cole corridor runs close by: a wooden footbridge called Collebregge was recorded here in 1405, and since around 1990 a public path follows the river all the way from Shirley to Bacons End near Chelmsley Wood.
In 1958, a resident remembered 3 vendor vans pulling up on the Heathway before Shard End Crescent's shops were built. Today, Sandham Grange at no 165 offers 36 retirement flats, opened in 2005.
