Shard End was rural fringe until 1931, when Birmingham earmarked it for slum-clearance rehousing. Post-war, nearly 4,000 houses rose between Hodge Hill Common and the River Cole, replacing a wartime REME camp on Hurst Lane.
In 2019, a Turnley Road resident robbed the One Stop on Maryland Avenue, Hodge Hill, threatening two women with an axe. He was sentenced to six years and nine months at Birmingham Crown Court.
A 5G mast appeal on Timberley Lane was allowed despite the inspector finding it visually intrusive, because the area lacked effective coverage and 32 alternative sites were all found unsuitable.
Shard End Lake is a former gravel pit filled by a natural spring, now part of the 11km Kingfisher Country Park corridor along the River Cole, where kingfishers and herons feed year-round.
In 1909, a clay pot at Shard End Farm yielded 200 Roman silver denarii spanning Nero to Commodus. Before the permanent library opened, a travelling librarian made doorstep deliveries across the estate throughout the 1950s and 1960s.
