On The Timber Way
Timber Way rose from boarded-up 1960s maisonettes after 2009, neighbours to two future rock stars
History

In 2009, Birmingham allocated the name Timber Way to honour the area's woodland connection, neighbours including Pear Tree Road and Alderpits Road. A partnership with Barratt Homes then replaced 100 former properties with nearly 300, demolishing derelict 1960s maisonettes to build The Shard, which opened in 2012.

Planning

In May 2010, Birmingham approved 191 new homes, 12 retail units, a library and new public realm on the former maisonette land. The master plan partially closed Ownall Road and Shustoke Road, built two blocks around a central square, and placed a library on the eastern side.

Geography

Timber Way sits beside the River Cole valley, managed since 2004 as Kingfisher Country Park across 11km. A lake scooped from a former gravel quarry anchors the park, where kingfishers and herons feed along the river's southern stretch.

Local colour

Shard End Library opened in 1967 as Birmingham's first branch to issue plastic membership cards, clocking 100,000 loans in five months. Two doors apart on Shard End Crescent, Bev Bevan and a toddler Roger Taylor, future drummer of Duran Duran, grew up 110 feet from each other.
