On Northumberland Avenue
A 1938 Jewish hotel with a Cunard liner's panelling still stands on Northumberland Avenue
History

The avenue's most documented building opened in 1938 as a hotel built for Jewish visitors, complete with its own synagogue, before conversion into flats in the 1950s. Cliftonville Primary School followed in January 1976.

Crime

Documented incidents include three teen arrests on the avenue in 2018 and a knife-point attempted robbery at the Northdown Road junction in October 2022. Kent Police's current map records 2 incidents on or near the street.

Planning

A 420-signature petition in July 2013 pushed for a zebra crossing outside Cliftonville Primary School, and by 2014 Kent County Council was seeking an eight-classroom extension to expand the school to 810 places. Former Laleham School land off the avenue has since been redeveloped into 70 dwellings.

Geography

A 2011 watching brief at No. 11 uncovered a ditch, gully, flints and a possible chalk hearth beneath the plot. The avenue sits on Cliftonville's cliff-top plateau, roughly 20 metres above sea level, land that was still open fields in 1845.

Local colour

Northumberland Court's communal wood panelling came from RMS Mauretania II, scrapped in 1935, installed in a building that originally contained a synagogue and opened in 1938. The former hotel bar became a pub, then two flats.
