On the night of 16 March 1941, bombs struck houses opposite Paradise Cottage, killing a firewatcher named Mr Cox and everyone inside a St John Ambulance post opposite. Montpelier Court, which fronted the same road, was owned from 1824 by Edward Russell, a silversmith and pawnbroker.
Road blocks installed in the early 1990s on Richmond Road and Bath Buildings removed through-traffic, and former gardens are now being built over. Behind No. 127, a self-build proposal would replace a rear garage with a three-storey, three-bedroom house.
Digging a wartime Anderson shelter in Paradise Cottage's basement hit solid rock after just two feet, and a well beneath the utility room, which never ran dry, also supplied No. 80 next door. Victoria Cottage, which stood nearby, was demolished in the early 1870s and replaced by three terraced houses.
An 1937 Evening Post piece remembered Richmond Road by its older name, Middle Hill. Bristol Broadsides, the community publisher, later ran its co-operative from a Richmond Road office shared with Bristol Voice magazine.
