George Muller opened his first Ashley Down orphan house in 1849, transferring children from four rented Wilson Street houses. By 1870 five homes held 1,722 children, served by a purpose-built bath block and bounded by a hillside house predating the whole enterprise.
A 2024 condition approval confirmed an independent-living teaching block with overnight accommodation on the college site. A July 2025 Local Plan draft proposes a new pedestrian and cycle route linking Ashley Down Road to Gloucester Road, while Section 106 money is earmarked for two nearby bus-stop upgrades.
A 1956 city engineer's borehole logged a deep limestone and clay sequence beneath Ashley Down, at roughly the same level as an 1868 quarry that yielded ammonite-bearing shales. Above ground, Pennant rubble stone walls up to six feet high still divide the former orphanage plots.
W.G. Grace lived at Ashley Grange, just off the road, during the 1890s; playwright Peter Nichols grew up at No. 192 opposite the orphanage in 1927. Bristol County Ground's Ashley Down Road end and a Grade II villa designed by S.B. Gabriel in 1865 complete the street's unlikely cast.
